Across the Burrows toward Appledore

Judi Morton MA

Judi studied at the St.Albans College of Art, where she took her foundation course under the tutorage of Roger Leworthy and Arnold van Praag.  In the early Eighties, when living in North Wales and running a smallholding, she attended Liverpool Polytechnic where she attained her BA Hons in Fine Art (tutor Mike Knowles). During 2001 she achieved her MA at Christchurch University College, Canterbury, working under Bob Stone and Dave Shutt. Since 1981 her works have shown in successful exhibitions throughout England and Wales. She has worked on various private and public group projects including producing a mural with young offenders in a high security prison. Intensely involved with landscape her work centres on the search for a painterly language through which to express the 'essence' of place. The paintings seek to combine an emotional response to the subject, with the physicality of what is seen. It is through capturing the atmosphere and mood of the subject that a painting comes to life. "I want the finished painting to take me back to a particular time and place, essentially capturing through paint a fleeting but significant experience of somewhere." It is the infinite possibilities of a landscape, which provide a catalyst for artistic enquiry. The variety of light, colour, atmosphere and location are a constant inspiration. A balance is sought between the intellectual order of studio practice, memory and direct observation.
